[Qgis-user] Introduction and question, how do I mark an area on a map showing location of a trench?

My suggestion, is that you should create a new vector layer to store
your annotations and their descriptions. Then in edit mode you can place
a point where you like and fill in some properties for it. To make it
look the way you want you would then apply symbology styles in the
properties dialog of the layer.
