Hi there.

Yes, there has been several discussions on this subject over the years. I have been very interested in this functionality. Recently there were 2 developments almost simultaneous: the Embed layers and groups option, and the importProject plugin. Them Embed option reads an existing project and allows the user to import a layer from this project. It keeps the reference to the original project, so the layers definitions keep getting updated when the user opens its project later on. The plugin does a similar thing, but does not keep the link between our project and the original one (which could be a good thing). But it does not support group layers (until now).

I am also happy to use the Embed layers option. Just missing the possibility to define the original project so the user does not have to repeatedly choose one.

Regards,
Duarte

Hi list,

I'm currently defining specifications for a plugin, which could create a hierarchical drop down menu quickly add layers to the current project.
Ideally, it could work like the "importProject" plugin, by reading a qgs file.
The hierarchy could be provided by layer groups. Styles could be easily set inside the qgs. Aliases for layers too..
almost perfect and simple to administrate.

I have been using such a tool with mapinfo for years.. with a similar tool called "usermenu".

As a first try, we simply built a static coded menu. Works fine, but it's difficult to apply a specific qml style, and takes long time to code.

Does anyone have had a similar idea? Maybe it's already done?

Cheers
Regis
