Can you break the large file down into digestible parts (e.g. rivers,
roads, etc)

I have tried to work with files up to 450mb in arcgis, mapinfo & qgis,
in Windows, wine & linux; and found in all cases that above about 50mb
I notice a performance hit, where as after breaking the big files into
smaller chunks, even working with the same total volume of data
performance improves.
