Hi, Brian.
Did you try to reinstall qgis forcing the version available in 
ubuntu-gis unstable?
You probably has two qgis repositories working now, since qgis 1.8 is 
not available in the default ubuntu repositories. You may want to remove 
the older repository and stick with ubuntugis unstable to avoid version 
conflicts.
