[Qgis-user] Add Ring with existing features?

Is there a way to add a ring to a polygon using an existing polygon?  Like the Illustrator Minus Front feature.  I want to do this while editing, not as a operation on a layer as a whole from the Vector menu tools (it looks like it would be Geoprocessing->Difference there).

QGIS 1.8 - I didn't see anything obvious.

Is there such a feature in development?

Theory of the Universe
