[Qgis-user] QGis for bird surveys

I'm sure there is a very simple answer to my problem, but for the moment I
can't figure it out... so I hope you will forgive me for asking your
advice.
I have been asked to create and maintain a GIS of sightings of a particular
species of rare bird. The data comes to me in the form of an Excel file
containing various items (date, location, data recorder, type of sighting,
geographical coordinates of the sighting, etc.). From this I have to create
a shapefile containing all the data... so far so good. The quantity of data
is very limited, a maximum of about 200 records per year or thereabouts.
The problem comes when I have to update the data, modifying certain records
or adding a new Excel file with new sightings with new coordinates etc.
Is there an easy way to do this directly in QGis? If not, can anyone
suggest a simple workflow to achieve the same result?
I wondered if it could all be managed using Spatialite or equivalent, but
as I have absolutely no database programming or management experience, I'm
finding it hard to understand the best way to proceed.
Any advice? And thanks in advance, Sarah.
