Hi,

If it is just point data I would also recommend to keep the data in a
plain text file and maintain the data in a spreadsheet (LibreOffice or
Excel). You can then read in the data with the delimited text reader
plugin (in the layer menu). Just make sure that the columns stay
consistent. I believe that QGIS 2.0 (or master) can also read Excel and
OpenOffice files directly.

If you the choice I would recommend LibreOffice over MS-Office. It
handles text files better than MS Office. But the latter would work as
well - if you already familiar with it. The only small problem you may
have is encoding for foreign characters. Just make sure that QGIS and
the spreadsheet both use the same encoding.
