Just for fun I upgraded a test install of ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04.

Master Debian-nightly installs nicely.

Stable release for trusty complains:
/rjhale at gis2:/etc/apt/sources.list.d$ sudo apt-get install qgis
python-qgis//

//Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have//
//requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable//
//distribution that some required packages have not yet been created//
//or been moved out of Incoming.//
//The following information may help to resolve the situation://
//
//The following packages have unmet dependencies://
// python-qgis : Depends: python-qgis-common (= 2.2.0-1+trusty1) but it

// Recommends: qgis-plugin-grass but it is not going to be
installed//
// Recommends: qgis-plugin-globe but it is not going to be
installed//

Just an FYI -
