[Qgis-user] Can't add multiple features to a layer

I am unable to add more than one feature to a layer. I can successfully add
one feature, whether polygon or point, saving its attributes etc. But when
I try to add another polygon by clicking anywhere on the map I don't get
the red line that indicates the start of the next polygon build. Depending
where I click various nodes of the original polygon sometimes change
colour. Likewise if I'm adding points clicking will bring up the attribute
dialog box but when that is completed no new dot appears on the map, just
the dot of the first feature.

I am running QGIS 2.0.2-Dufour on Mavericks (10.9.1) on MacBook Air.
