[Qgis-user] Technical specifications

Hello,
As it was not clear exactly what the needs of the department were I wanted
to offer an alternative perspective.
I have a small planning and design firm and we utilize QGIS healily on all
of our computers. I also teach GIS at a local masters program in planning.
While I agree with the specs put forward by the other respondents if you
are engaging in large geoprocessing tasks or if you want to make sure that
the computer you purchase is somewhat future proof. However, my students
and I do an amazing amount of processing and map creation on much less. I
have 16 GB of ram on my 6 year old windows machine and with the right
optimizations and able to run state wide geoprocessing tasks (I imagine you
could even have less RAM on linux). Some of my students this year somehow
ended up with 8 GB of ram on windows and if they are careful about the
number of programs they have open can easily run town scale GIS processing.
