This is a great point.  In the context of making trail maps for a
conservation organization, I decided not to deal with propriety
software, both because any time I put into learning it would only be
useful if someone were paying for a license (and providing and
administering a Windows machie to run it on!), and because it means
other casual contributors wouldn't be able to just use it.
