Hi Zoltan,

We have a Town Planning client that needs to do changes on a cadastral shape file as captured or to do planning of a new township layout. They have two choices ArcGIS(Expensive) or QGIS (Inexpensive) the only problem is the ability to do the data capture with QGIS.

Hi Johan,
How many erven do you need to capture?

Is it worth rewriting the stuff I did in the 80's?
(I can't find my old HP86, so re-write would be necessary :-)  )

I stand corrected on this, but I believe that the SGO has in house tools and of course the surveyors have survey programs that capture it. One must be careful as the tricky part is connecting one parcel to the next - as your area of capture gets larger and different Land Surveyors have done different surveys you will see they don't fit together (because one is working on coordinates).

Coordinates are pretty meaningless to a land surveyor aside to give a general location, they have little weight.

You will find as well that the bearing and distance need not tally up on adjoining surveys. I rarely adopt previous bearing and distances and prefer to use my own measurements.

The Azimuth and Distance plugin that Uazu mentions does the basics but is fairly rudimentary.

We've developed a QGIS plugin that does coordinate as well as bearing and distance capture and editing. It maintains the 'beacons' thus generated as points in PostGIS. It then allows you to graphically define a parcel based on an ordered set of beacons and generates the parcels on the fly. The result is a beacon layer and a dynamic 'parcels' layer.

It is working on 1.8 in a client environment (Ogun State, Nigeria) and would need funding to update to the QGIS 2.0 API and to make it more generic for wider release.

There is also a UN FOSS project for cadastral management, SOLA [1], that is being trialled in various locations
