OpenStreetMap [OSM] is doing just that. Disclosure: I am an OSM mapper
and part of the core sysadmin team.
We have over 1400 "mappers" who have contributed data in South Africa.
We always appreciate more help.

I hacked up this Overpass Query ("SQL" service for OSM data) to demo:
 All hospitals (in OSM) in the Western Cape: http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/on

OSM has many exciting service...
eg: geocoding (forward and reverse)
