Thanks very much for the help Charles, I have had a look at PostgreSQL and it definitely seems the better option for application within GIS.

I understand this is free package, but is there any means of gaining recognised certification such as exams or workshops as with the MCSA SQL Server exams?

I currently hold a Masters degree  in Environmental Sciences but want to add to it with the addition of SQL courses. I have looked at Microsoft accredited courses namely 70-461 (Querying Microsoft SQL Server 2012), 70-762 (Administering Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Databases) and 40-763 (Implementing a Data Warehouse with Microsoft SQL Server 2012).

Can the professionals within the industry please advise me as to whether these courses will aid my GIS career and potential or are there specific courses which can be recommended to me?

Any advice in the right direction will be greatly appreciated.
