Hi Cameron,

Here is a manual you can look at, it is partly created by Tim Sutton and his wife Marcell
http://docs.qgis.org/2.6/pdf/en/QGIS-2.6-QGISTrainingManual-en.pdf
Chapter 15 - Module: Database Concepts with PostgreSQL
Chapter 16 - Module: Spatial Database Concepts with PostGIS
Should give you the basics of PostgreSQL and PostGIS

Tim is part of Kartoza : http://kartoza.com/

Subject: Re: [OSGeo Africa] SQL Courses

Thanks very much for the help Charles, I have had a look at PostgreSQL and it definitely seems the better option for application within GIS.

I understand this is free package, but is there any means of gaining recognised certification such as exams or workshops as with the MCSA SQL Server exams?

Dear Cameron,

I think you’d really be best off learning your SQL and DB admin with an open source product such as PostgreSQL/PostGIS, for which courses are regularly offered by some of the members of this forum. PostgreSQL/PostGIS is incredibly powerful and you can write complex functions to manipulate spatial data any way you want.

Also check out Postgres’s documentation: http://www.postgresql.org/docs/ and some tutorials: http://www.postgresqltutorial.com, as well as PostGIS manual: http://suite.opengeo.org/opengeo-docs/postgis/index.html. Also look on Kartoza’s website for some excellent training material. They are all very helpful and are free. I will admit a course is handy to get your head around the initial setting up and getting to know the product. After that, the both the PostGIS and Postgres manuals are brilliant.

all the best,

Charles Rethman

Hi all,

I am currently working within the GIS industry and looking to expand my knowledge and abilities. I am still fairly new to the industry yet have noticed an increase in the use of SQL.

I currently hold a Masters degree in Environmental Sciences but want to add to it with the addition of SQL courses. I have looked at Microsoft accredited courses namely 70-461 (Querying Microsoft SQL Server 2012), 70-762 (Administering Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Databases) and 40-763 (Implementing a Data Warehouse with Microsoft SQL Server 2012).

Can the professionals within the industry please advise me as to whether these courses will aid my GIS career and potential or are there specific courses which can be recommended to me?

Any advice in the right direction will be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Cameron Muller
