Another small thing I've noticed about QGIS MapServer is that there
appears to be no halo on the few contour labels that do show up:

In this one some of the labels seem to have some halo instead:

Maybe the way the halo is drawn is not very consistent in curved labels?
Almost seems like the first char gets some halo and the next ones do not
