I completely concur with you, and for me this is probably also one of
the reasons the exercise did not gain traction this year ( for me it
sure played a role, c.f. also an email from me to this list after the
Denver shootout proposing we stray away from WMS and time-consuming
styling setups and instead focus on the time it takes to generate a
set of tiles). That said, replacing the current presentation with
seemingly similar oriented presentations, even more so that have not
been vetted by the actual server teams, is not a suitable substitute.
