[OSGeo-Board] Sysadmin ideas/motion

This server will be used for SVN repositories that we can't afford to
lose.  I don't think that $3000 will buy a server with the kind of
profile that we need.  My spec for a server would be:

- dual-dualcore
- 2-4Gb memory
- mirrored RAID1 disks for OS & apps
- lots of RAID5 for svn and mailing list storage (external SAS disk
shelf recommended)
- redundant power supplies

Assuming Dell servers, we'd be looking at ~$5000 for a rack-mount server
and another ~$5000 for an SAS shelf with ~800Gb 10k SAS disks.  We'll
also want a UPS if OSUOSL doesn't have an adequate solution.

There will also be a need for a backup solution, hopefully with offsite
storage.  Does OSUOSL offer anything in this regard?

Jo and I have dug up some options for getting some sysadmin support from
OSL up and running ASAP for helping with our migration.

In a nutshell, we are proposing:
- -hiring an OSL staffer for 4 months ($25,000)
- -having OSL purchase a server for our exclusive use ($3,000)
- -he could also then help us design our migration plan in more detail
- -after 2 months, re-evaluate and extend the contract if we feel it is
working well

There is a specific staff member at OSL who has become available and has
supported drupal and other core services.  If we really wanted to, we
could negotiate with him directly and hire him as OSGeo staff, likely
for a reduced amount.  But in the interests of time and reducing our
level of commitment, we think having an arms length arrangement might be
best.

So I hope this is enough for you to discuss and possible make a motion
on today if you would like.
