I mean take one step at a time instead of a grand plan for a global  
teach-in.  If it works out well, then why not support others who want  
to try it?  If it sucks don't do it again.  If others in the  
community see it works, then it might encourage them to organise  
something too.

In fact, that's partly what I'm trying to counter.  I think there are  
a hundred different ways of doing similar events.  Jumping from this  
proposal to doing a "global teach-in" would seem to be jumping ahead  
to me.  Not meaning to ignore other options, or rejecting that idea,  
but I haven't seen anyone present them to the board yet :)
