I fully agree. There is no point it trying to make money from such events.
There are other opportunities.

Early this year we organized the
 http://grass.osgeo.org/wiki/GRASS_Community_Sprint_Prague_2011
which was pretty successful - many participants, new code.

We got enough sponsoring money to cover travel costs for all
who made a request.
