I was thinking that $1000/day is what should cover the speakers fee, ie 
wages, which is on top of other expenses. (When organising foss4g 2009 I 
remember quotes from some keynote speakers in the order of $1500 to 
$3000 per day - although we were able to get speakers who had those fees 
waived).
