Jeff and Board, this is an official request to the Board (put it please in the agenda of your next meeting)

1) the request has to be sent to the Board or to the Discuss list?
2) which are the rules?

Many thanks for that!!

Maria

Maria, what you are not understanding, and I don't expect you to as you are not in my position, is that I actually get a lot of requests exact same as yours, often (I remember your private request came the same week as another). Yes from private companies and from researchers. The solution is for you to bring your request publicly, or as I see the 2007 guidelines state as noted by Even, bring your request to the Discuss list. Putting me as responsibility to bring your request publicly puts me in a very tricky situation (supposed to be representing the whole community, but could be seen as supporting one private company's interest).

Jeff, I contacted you as President of OSGeo in such a way that you bring
this thing to the attention of the Board. I did the same with George
Percivall and there were no problems at all. You didn't understand, even
when I tried to explain it, and you are continuing not understanding.
Anyway, it doesn't matter. Probably the language divide exists. Now I
know that the procedure is to send directly to the Board and not to the
President. And that' s that for that.

But my question now is another one: what are the rules of the Board for
deciding about supporting a project or not?
Maxi shares his thoughts, Gerald also, but I'm asking the Board position
about this question.

Many thanks!
Maria

This is a good example of the challenge/stress I was referring to. In
your case both you and another party (private company) contacted me
privately to support a bid and I asked repeatedly to request it
publicly instead.

But I agree, steps/guidelines on a wiki page is needed right away for
how to request official support for contracts, it is not an easy thing
to handle.

I'm happy to see that now the approach of the Board has changed with
respect to the past. I asked twice and twice my request was rejected.
What is the new policy the Board has in mind? To support always? To
support only in some cases? Which cases?
Thanks for answering.
Best.

(UvA)

Guys, I believe Jeff will have some input to this topic,

but in the past, there were different points of views of European
board members and america-based board members.

And I would like to read the Jeff's and Michael's opinion to this,
because I feel, they have more fine sense for those kinds of
supporting letters then we in Europe have

From my point of view there is no issue.

Whoever asks for a support letter which could help in gain funds
to develop, promote, advance FOSS4G should be supported by OSGeo.
No exclusion, even if two people are bidding in "competition",
they could always ask for a letter each and I don't see any conflict.

I strongly believe that We, as the foundation, should always
support fund raising as one of our primary objective and only
verify that the proposal is in line with our CoC and mission

      Hi Jachym,

in this case Jan’s “competition” is only research institutes
from other (non-geo) disciplines, so personally I don’t see
      the issue.

Do you still see an issue given the above?

      Best regards,

      Hi,

Sorry about remaining still. Maybe you already addressed
this. But AFAIK the policy is, not to explicitly support
anybody's grants/project proposals, because of once you would
have to support one project over another, which could cause
      us a lot of troubles..

          Hi board,

I’ve been contacted by Jan Hartmann from the University
of Amsterdam to see if OSGeo can write a letter of
support for a large non-profit proposal he is putting
          together, details are here:

http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Uva_letter_of_support

The proposal is due May 18th so would be great if we can
vote on it in this week's board meeting.

          TIA.

          Best regards,
