All,

Some more thoughts on Item #4 (from the solicitor). Just some things to think about.

No hard feelings here, but I thought I would add my own comments here as it looks like my request for funding of Thumb drives is dead, or will be soon.

I’m sensing a a disconnect about what folks on the board feel is a good use of promotional funding.

I see in the list below a couple of other requests for funding, or potential funding. These other request seem to be just fine though.

My approach to making the request was based on what the return to OSGeo would be. Our conference is targeting 300+ (we’ll actually have 350) new individuals, that while they are already in the Geo Professional space, have not generally been introduced to the Open Software options available. If even 2% (6 people) of the attendees came into the OSGeo fold for the long haul, I would count that as money well spent. Additionally, we could have set up a OSGeo Booth, which would have cost at least that much in Peoples time and the loss of booth space for other vendors during the Conference. There are some OSGeo members attending, but they are for the most part going to be busy demonstrating their own work vs manning a booth.

Oh, and did I mention, that we’re going to have a “Free” GeoMOOSE workshop and a group of OSGeo Project based presentations at the conference as well.

Maybe the fault is in how funding was requested. Would simply asking for OSGeo to sponsor our conference at the $2k level have worked better? I can do this for the next Board meeting.

If the Thumbdrives are considered a bad idea for promotions, how would folks envision spending a similar amount and getting a similar or better return on the spending? I’m always willing to learn new things.

Thanks

bobb
