[Board] Request for funding of OSGeo Live thumb drives for regional Geo-conference

OSGeo Live thump drives are an excellent outreach mechanism. One suggestion is that the marketing committee put in structures to provide OSGeo Live DVDs for free at any interested GIS conferences worldwide but ask the organisers to request those interested in the USBs to consider giving a small voluntary donation to the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo). The event organisers after the event then sends the donation collected to OSGeo and that will then be used to fund more OSGeo Live USBs for other events/outreach activities and will make this self sustaining and also help expanding to more events.

Anita (and others),
I’ve been a part of a few groups that have both generated and selectively given away the OSGeo Live thumb drives for some number of years now. In my opinion it’s the single best “hard” promotional item that OSGeo generates for the purpose of generating interest in the use of Open Geo Software.
The idea is to think about those that will use it from a mass handout, and not dwell on the ones that don’t. I don’t see this type of marketing plan as a waste, I see it as better way to cover an event. With a saturation process, we are better able to market the Drive and explain it’s uses at an event level, vs working in a one on one fashion. The folks that already have an interest are going to go and try it for themselves, they are not the target, it’s the ones that don’t know about it that you want to hook.
We also go out of our way to make it easy for first timers to use the Thumb drive by also including a cheat sheet 3x5 card that explains step by step how to get started with it.
If this method of advertising for OSGeo is seen as unpalatable to the group, then I could convert our request over to asking for a sponsorship of our event by OSGeo instead.

Just joining in to let you know that at recent events I've visited these USB drives were not given away for free but instead sold for a few Euros. This makes it possible for everyone interested to get a drive while at the same time avoiding unnecessary waste (both money and electronics) because - let's face it - most people who get one for free will not use it.
Best wishes,
Anita

Sounds like an amazing event, marketing committee should have a budget to work against shortly (it is an agenda topic for this week and you can see the budget<https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Board_of_Directors#Operational_Budget_for_2016> on the wiki ).
Cameron is involved with both marketing committee and OSGeo live and should be able to assist.

All,
I haven’t heard anything back on the following request from anyone (other than Jody commenting about where this should be sent . . .).
So trying again . . .
--------------------
All,
First, let me know if this is the wrong list to request from.
We’re holding a regional Geo conference and would like to include a OSGeo-Live thumb drive in each attendees goody bag. So, please consider this an official request for funding of OSGeo Live Thumb Drives for the event.
This is a multi- discipline, multi-state event for all things Geo. 60 confirmed presenters. This will be a highly knowledgable audience and because of the varied subject matter it will be an excellent venue to get the word out to new folks about OSGeo and it’s mission, via the OSGeo Live project. More info about the event can be seen here:
www.umgeocon.org<http://www.umgeocon.org/>
We’ve planned for 350 attendees. We can make our own thumb drives, and/or pay to have them made ourselves. We’ve handed these out in the past and will also include a getting started cheat sheet for each user to get them going with the least amount of effort.
I haven’t checked lately for the going rate on these. Local suppliers are advertising ~$5 each for an 8GB USB3.0 blank drive.
Request is for $2000 ($1750 for Drives, $250 for copying the OSGeo Live suite to each).
Related, my submission of the OSGeo Live presentation has been accepted at the event, and there will also be a (free) GeoMOOSE workshop.
