[Board] Can OSGEO accept a hypothecated donation?

Yes we can, in that we don’t provide a US tax deduction on donations, if we did, then that would be a step around the US tax laws. But since we don’t, we can do that. 

 

Technically, with a donation, we aren’t provide a guarantee  to abide by an earmark request but I’m assuming that a concurrence by the Board would be sufficient for you. 

 

So yes, it is my opinion, subject to disagreement from the other board members, that we can do this.

Hi Michael, 

 

OSGEO:UK has to spend a bunch of money by the end of the month for tax purposes, they would like to use some of it to improve GeoServer/QGIS SLD interoperability but don't wish to give the money directly to a company so they would rather go through the GeoServer PSC. But GeoServer has no independent way of accepting money so it would need to go through the OSGEO and then go to the GeoServer PSC to spend with the best-placed developers to carry out the work.

 

So the question is can a donation to OSGEO be earmarked in this way?
