[Board] OSGeo Website ( or UserID) initiative

Hello,

I organize and host the monthly meetup for our OSGeo Alberta Chapter. I
recently approached Jody Garnett and, on his suggestion, the Marketing
Committee to talk about my hope for making the process and value of becoming
an OSGeo member - specifically, getting the UserID - easier to understand
and articulate. (I would like to see all our meetup.com membership become
OSGeo members). Initial discussion suggested we might be better served to
widen the focus to making the website generally more inviting to people who,
like me, are not particularly technical and have only a general GIS
understanding.

I don't know that a broader website initiative will ultimately be seen as
enough of a value to prioritize but I'm willing and hoping to gather some of
the necessary context to help us decide. Some of that context would include:

The business need: What do the various stakeholders need or want the website
to accomplish for the organization?

The stakeholders (internal first, but also external): Who do we need to
include in determining both the needs and the success, or not, in meeting
those needs as it stands now?

The current state: What is the website set up to do? How well is that
working or not? What are the constraints, assumptions, dependencies,
requirements it is operating under currently?

In the immediate, I would look to the board for a sense of your interest or
readiness to engage in such an initiative (or see other resources engage)
and any input you can offer on these more specific questions, as well as any
questions you feel should be asked but are not noted here:

*	What do we measure as an organization and what do we consider
success?

*	Product installations, project contributions/contributors,
membership, fundraising, other?
*	Specifically related to the website: page visits, sign-ons, other?

*	On stakeholders, I'm assuming:

*	Internally: Board, Officers, and Project Officers. Others?
*	Externally: (Former or prospective) Sponsors, other aligned
organizations, (prospective) gov/academia/industry users and
decision-makers, others?

*	Market information: existing industry/user profiles, personas, etc
within our org.

I'm open to all thoughts and considerations specific to my points here or
otherwise. I will gather up all the feedback I receive - in addition to that
I've received already - and summarize it before sending it back out in the
coming (likely 2) weeks.

Thanks,

Scott.
