[OSGeo-Conf] Re:FOSS4G Conference Presentations and an academictrack

Hi all,

The proceedings discussion is related with the previous one about the
OSGeo 'main' conference strategy. The OSGeo Foss4g strategy includes a
scientific/research discussion on the annual conference? Or the meeting
is more focused on the tribes and the business?

Fortunately, there are already so many business initiatives around the
OSGeo tools, but it is quite dangerous to transform the main conference
in a fair to sell services around OSS. We must have all the participants
involved in the open source process.

FOSS4G 2009 was a good starting point. They started an academic track,
and they selected a known local publication to include selected papers.
Serena Coetzee organized the reviewing process, in which I was involved.

This year, more than an ISBN (which means nothing), we need a good
journal to published some selected papers. We don't have much time, but
I think we could talk with Springer to have the FOSS4G proceedings
published in the Lecture Notes in Geoinformation and Cartography series
http://www.springer.com/series/7418

As I said in the beginning, it is a strategic option: either we do have
an academic track or not. But if we choose to have one, we should make
it seriously.

Regards,

Jorge Gustavo
