Dear Jeff,
Here are answers for you questions:
Q: Although many private sector companies are mentioned in your letter, your
local committee contains no private sector representatives. Am I wrong on
this statement? Or was this by design?
A: Private sector companies will be as sponsors and supports, and not be as
organizing committee.
Q: Has your local committee given any thought to a potential theme for the
event? (such as FOSS4G within GIS Industry)
A: As the world's fastest-growing market and application development,
China's GIS industry has been very high speed of development, but the choice
and use of open source GIS are relatively backward. So the theme for the
event we suggest are as follow:
1. Open China & Open Source GIS
2. How to enhance Chinese technicians contribute to Open Source GIS
3. How to play a role in Small and Medium Enterprises for Open
Source GIS
4. How to Promote Chinese Open Source GIS for large-scale
application
5. How to jump-start the Chinese GIS platform for Open Source GIS
Q: Have you begun initial talks with the BICC venue? What dates/months are
potentially available? (I do see that you mention September later in the
letter)
A: Yes. We have begun to talk with BICC venue, and we are very familiar
with some person in charge of the conference with the BICC. Any dates of
September in 2012 are available. But for BICC, the sooner we reserve the
venue and the rooms the better.
Q: I know it must have been difficult to submit a proposal for FOSS4G 2010
and then not have it accepted. Can you briefly explain the differences from
that proposal/proposed team and this current one? Where has there been
improvements, in your opinion?
A: First, this year, GIS Industry has been on the state priority list. China
Association for GIS System has changed its name to China Association for GIS
Industry, and that means the state has attached great importance to GIS
Industry far more than 2010.
Second, as the letter of intent mentioned, 3sNews has rich experiences in
organizing the conferences and owns many resources of media and users. For
organizing the international conference, we will prepare much better than
2010.
Q: Your letter of intent is 3 pages long, yet the guidelines specifically
stated "a maximum of 2 pages" for the letter of intent, can you explain why
your letter is not within those guidelines?
A: For the letter of intent, we had tried to compress the words. Perhaps we
were too excited to demonstrate our capabilities to hold FOSS4G in Beijing,
China. In addition, the habit of talking for Chinese people is little bit
different from Western people, so I am so sorry for the long translation.
Best regards,
Linda
