[OSGeo-Conf] Priorities for Conference Committee

While not formally a part of Conference Dev, the BLOC team has read this
thread with great interest and I thought it might be useful to hear a
perspective from our team as we continue to go through the "onboarding
process" for full partnership in producing the Global 2017 FOSS4G
Conference.

   1. First and foremost, we have been overwhelmed by the assistance that
has been offered to our team throughout the proposal, selection and now
onboarding process. It is amazing to consider that all this help has been
offered and provided on a strictly volunteer basis.
   2. In spite of the handbook and the willingly shared institutional
knowledge, Cameron's point #7 is very important. It does *feel* like we
are starting anew and that there may be some lost opportunities for a more
streamlined onboarding and knowledge transfer process, potentially aided by
   professional help.
   3. We have also seen that there is a good deal of very important but
more routine work involved with things like agreements and formalizing
relationships with PCO's and again it is amazing that this process is as
smooth as it is with the variety volunteers involved and the volume of
email discussion. The notion of having some kind of professional help that
"plays point" and tee things up for the committees seems worth considering
going forward. This too was brought up in the Bob Basque initiated thread
on thumb-drives in the context of supporting smaller events and marketing
   opportunities.
   4. With the start of the 2018 process in sight, we also believe that
Cameron's point #8 on the "relationship with Location Tech" is very
important. Although we were successful in the bid process, we did find the
process somewhat bruising and we honestly did not expect or anticipate this
competition to be so much about the Location Tech relationship. Indeed, all
three cities put in extremely strong proposals that we believe would have
delivered successful conferences. From my personal vantage point there
should be a workable long term, positive and supportive relationship
between these two foundations. Indeed, there are many more interests that
are shared between to the two organizations than might be disagreements.
The BLOC wants to work with LT for the strongest possible North American
event in 2016 and we look forward to their support for a strong Global
event, on North American soil, in 2017. It would appear there is a very
strong basis for collaboration and partnership.

We believe these Conference Dev discussions are of the utmost importance.
Indeed, we all feel that FOSS4G continues to be on the rise with ever
increasing interest. We hope that more and more successful conferences -
including Bonn and Boston - will help create further financial stability
for OSGeo and that this stability may be able to lead to things like
professional staff to support the vibrant volunteer committee and Board
ecosystem.

Regardless, we will watch these discussions carefully and we stand at the
ready to share our experiences and viewpoint if helpful. And, thanks again
for your assistance in getting our agreements produced and signed last week.

Sincerely, MT
