Just to add a couple of hints here to the other comments:

* You can use R on your PostgreSQL stored procedures[1]
* There is an "spatial" task view at R website[2] with a lot of info and
links to spatial-related R packages

Ahh, and there's a mailing list for spatial R stuff[3]
