Dear colleagues,

I came across these articles in The Guardian and Financial Times on UK Government working on developing AI Regulation.

Details at https://www.ft.com/content/6cc8a0f3-f2fc-4470-a881-8763451b47ea

 https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/may/31/uk-should-play-leading-role-in-developing-ai-global-guidelines-sunak-to-tell-biden

I am interested to learn more on this and about the UK AI regulation Whitepaper. Will the UK AI regulation Whitepaper look into key ethical questions on

  * What are the main human rights issues in the digital age?
  * What are the ethical implications of surveillance capitalism? For example , automated tools being used to monitor and manage workers?
  * How are basic human rights (as defined by the UN) embedded into current data legislation? Is there more to do?
  * Who owns our data? Who benefits from our data?
  * How we might avoid the pitfalls of feudalism and colonialism in this new and constantly evolving landscape.
  * How do we make sure there are proper governance mechanisms in place to embed values in all data ecosystems to protect human rights in the platform economy?
  * What steps are there to mitigate the damaging effects of algorithmic biases?
  * What governance policies and frameworks are needed to make sure digital technologies and opportunities are available for everyone and there are no monopolies created?
  * How do we make sure there are proper governance mechanisms in place to embed values in all data ecosystems?
  * Whether, and why, it might be time for data ethics to become an integral part of the education curriculum in universities.
  * How can we build capacity for Data Ethics in universities and industry.

I would like to bring to your kind attention the Campaign for Data Ethics in Education. The African Association of Universities (a University Association counting over 400 Universities across the African Continent), the University of Nottingham and the Ethical Data Initiative launched the Campaign for Data Ethics in Education with a successful online event .

The event, a panel discussion on Data Ethics Policy in Higher Education, was streamed live on AAU TV. More information on the panel is at https://ethicaldatainitiative.org/2023/05/12/data-ethics-policy-in-higher-education/

The recording of the event is available to watch at https://ethicaldatainitiative.org/2023/05/26/successful-launch-to-the-campaign-for-data-ethics-in-education/

With hundreds of universities across the world already supporting our Campaign for Data Ethics in Higher Education, there is huge momentum building. Please support our Campaign for Data Ethics in Higher Education.

Best wishes

Suchith
