would love to hear from our UK friends regarding this story --

http://technology.guardian.co.uk/weekly/story/0,,1942266,00.html

Also from the above article --

"Ordnance Survey's head, Vanessa Lawrence, has said she opposes [Free
Our Data] campaign on the grounds that future governments cannot be
relied upon to continue to support mapping, which in "free data"
countries such as the US has been an easy target for budget cuts."

It was actually personally interesting to listen to Vanessa Lawrence a
couple of days ago in Santiago de Chile at the GSDI-9 conference. Her
presentation on Ordnance Survey was followed by a presentation by the
folks from the global digital commons movement, and the contrast, to
me, was striking.
