A professor position in Geospatial Information System (GIS) is currently
open at the Department of geomatics sciences, Laval University (Quebec
City, Canada).

Posting from: May 9 to June 26 2013

Information about the Faculty and the Department

The Department of Geomatics Sciences at Université Laval is seeking to
fill a tenure-track academic position in geospatial information systems
(GIS). Requisite expertise includes the design and the application of
spatial analysis methods (2D/3D) and geospatial database design
methodology. Université Laval (http://www.ulaval.ca) is one of the ten
largest research universities in Canada, with more than 45,000 students.
It is located in Quebec City, a UNESCO World Heritage City, with one of
the highest qualities of life in North America. The Department of
Geomatics Sciences consists of 17 full-time professors, more than 250
undergraduate students (future engineers and land-surveyors), and about
50 graduate students (M.Sc. and Ph.D.). It offers 9 training programs in
Geomatics, some unique in Canada, which are certified by Professional
associations (Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec and the Ordre des
arpenteurs-géomètres du Québec). The Department’s research activities
are coordinated primarily through the Centre for Research in Geomatics –
CRG (http://www.crg.ulaval.ca), recognized for its leadership and
multidisciplinarity. It created GEOIDE (http://www.geoide.ulaval.ca),
one of the Canadian Network of Centres of Excellence in geomatics, which
has always been directed by a member of the CRG at Université Laval, and
Quebec’s newly created innovation network in convergence of geospatial
intelligence (abbreviated as ®CRG) The Department of Geomatics Sciences
also offers other important initiatives in research such as a Canada
Research Chair in Cognitive Geomatics, a Geospatial Data Augmented
Reality laboratory, a Ge at design laboratory, and a laboratory for the
Exploration of Immersive Medias for Human Rehabilitation.

Position description

Today, the design of GIS solutions requires the consideration of the new
realities associated with a “wired” society and social networks. These
include a broad variety of users, the need to obtain responses in real
time, regardless of the location, and an increased risk associated with
inappropriate and unplanned uses of geospatial data. Accordingly, the
research activities of the incumbent will have to be oriented toward the
development and application of spatial analysis methods (2D/3D) as well
as database design methods which take this context into account.

The successful candidate will teach regular classes at the
undergraduate, graduate and post graduate levels, and perform
leading-edge research regarding geospatial information systems (GIS).
He/she will also need to supervise students at all three levels, and
develop the means to obtain his/her own research funding, including the
development of public and private partnerships. He/she will also need to
demonstrate openness to multidisciplinary collaboration.

Moreover, he/she will participate in departmental activities and in
those of the Centre for Research in Geomatics (CRG) and the University.
Potentially, he/she could be called upon to teach and perform research
outside of his/her area of expertise, i.e., in the other Geomatics areas
in which the Department works.

Requisite qualifications

Persons interested in applying for the position must hold a Ph.D. in a
relevant discipline. They must have leading-edge knowledge in the basic
sciences related to the position. Postdoctoral training or equivalent
practical experience is desirable. Candidacies will be evaluated with
regard to the three major university functions (teaching, research and
supervision of students), the candidate’s leadership and abilities to
administer projects, and commitment to the scientific community and
other relevant communities.

A career profile making the candidate eligible for admission to Quebec’s
professional engineering association (Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec)
would be an important asset. Since French is the language of teaching at
Université Laval, the candidate must be able to teach in that language
by the end of a one-year period. Knowledge of the English language is
also required.

Salary and working conditions

Based on the experience of the person and according to the collective
agreement in force.

Position

     - Closing date: June 26, 2013
     - Starting date: before January 1th, 2014

     - curriculum vitæ,
     - letter of presentation that resume the relevant experience of the
       position,
     - a list of publications and a copy of 2 relevant scientific papers,
