A professor position in Applied Remote Sensing and Digital Image
Processing is currently open at the Department of geomatics sciences,
Laval University (Quebec City, Canada).
Posting from: May 9 to August 16th 2013
Information about the Faculty and the Department
The Department of Geomatics Sciences at Université Laval is seeking to
fill a tenure-track academic position in applied remote sensing and
digital image processing. Université Laval (http://www.ulaval.ca) is one
of the ten largest research universities in Canada, with more than
45,000 students. It is located in Quebec City, a UNESCO World Heritage
City, with one of the highest qualities of life in North America. The
Department of Geomatics Sciences consists of 17 full-time professors,
more than 250 undergraduate students (future engineers and
land-surveyors), and about 50 graduate students (M.Sc. and Ph.D.). It
offers nine training programs in Geomatics, some unique in Canada, which
lead to certification by professional associations. The Department of
Geomatics Sciences’ research activities are coordinated primarily
through the Centre for Research in Geomatics - CRG
(http://www.crg.ulaval.ca), recognized for its leadership and
multidisciplinarity. The Department of Geomatics Sciences also offers
other important initiatives in research such as a Canada Research Chair
in Cognitive Geomatics, a Geospatial Data Augmented Reality laboratory,
a Ge at design laboratory, and a laboratory for the Exploration of
Immersive Medias for Human Rehabilitation. In addition, the Department
of Geomatics Sciences is part of the Faculty of Forestry, Geography and
Geomatics (http://www.ffgg.ulaval.ca), which also contains several
active research centres, such as the Centre for Forest Research and the
Centre for Northern Studies.
Position description
The successful candidate will teach regular classes at the
undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels in applied remote
sensing and digital image processing. Given the characteristics of the
position, the teaching provided will have to meet the requirements of
the three departments of the Faculty of Forestry, Geography and
Geomatics. The incumbent’s research orientations will also need to
encompass multi disciplinary collaboration, especially regarding the
themes identified as Faculty priorities, i.e., sustainable development,
the environment and spatial planning. Consequently, the candidate will
need to demonstrate applied research activities, most particularly in
forest remote sensing (landscape ecology, forest inventory,
sylviculture). Additionally, terrestrial remote sensing (especially in
urban and northern settings) or aquatic remote sensing (i.e. lacustrine
and coastal) will be considered as valuable application domain.
His/her research activities will need to address the development and
implementation of image processing algorithms, and multi-sensor
integration. The fields of hyperspectral and RADAR imagery as well as
LiDAR are of particular interest for this position. The candidate should
demonstrate expertise in connection with the emergence of new mobile
acquisition solutions.
The successful candidate will supervise students at all three levels,
perform research and development tasks, and participate in departmental
and faculty activities as well as in those of one of the University’s
recognized research centres.
Requisite qualifications
Persons interested in applying for this position must hold a Ph.D. in a
relevant discipline. They must have leading-edge knowledge in the basic
sciences related to this post. Postdoctoral training or equivalent
practical experience is desirable. Candidacies will be evaluated with
regard to the three major university functions (teaching, research and
supervision of students), the candidate’s leadership and abilities to
administer projects, and commitment to the scientific community and
other relevant communities.
Since French is the language of teaching at Université Laval, the
candidate must be able to teach in that language within a one-year
period. Knowledge of English is also required. A career profile making
the candidate eligible for admission to a relevant professional
association would be an asset.
Salary and working conditions
Based on the experience of the person and according to the collective
agreement in force.
Position
