Ok. I might be able to get my hands on a 64bit testing VM. If that is the case, I will try out your changes, testing and porting to trunk as needed.

My sandbox branch (sandbox/linux64) builds successfully on Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit via automake.

Unit tests however, were failing. 

I logged the failures for tests I could run under (http://trac.osgeo.org/fdo/ticket/761). Didn't proceed much further due to the higher priority item of getting MapGuide Open Source 2.5 out the door.
