Good work! I can confirm that

sudo apt-get install bzr autotools-dev libexif-dev libcurl4-gnutls-dev libgconf2-dev libgtk2.0-dev libsqlite3-dev, libxml2-dev libglade2-dev 
bzr branch  http://www.foxtrotgps.org/branches/foxtrotgps-dev/   
cd foxtrotgps-dev
./autogen.sh
./configure --prefix=/tmp/ftgps
make
make install
/tmp/ftgps/bin/foxtrotgps

is a working way to test without root privileges as of revision 32 on
debian unstable/amd64.
