Hi, I think there are no reason to use old and new libgpsd. Installing
newer libgpsd is easy as:

sudo apt-get remove libgps18
http://download.berlios.de/gpsd/gpsd-2.94.tar.gz
tar zxvf gpsd-2.94.tar.gz
cd gpsd-2.94/
./configure
sudo make install

But next error with make was:
libtool: Version mismatch error.  This is libtool 2.2.6 Debian-2.2.6a-4, but the
libtool: definition of this LT_INIT comes from libtool 2.2.6b.
libtool: You should recreate aclocal.m4 with macros from libtool 2.2.6
Debian-2.2.6a-4
libtool: and run autoconf again.


libtool 2.2.6b-2ubuntu1 installed
