Cool! However, this sounds so custom that I am not sure if you want to
start modifying the C code.

I recommend you take a look a buscatcher. It's a simple python
application that tracks the public buses in Helsinki. It uses
python-osmgpsmap for rendering, it is also a fork of the tangogps
codebase.
