[FOSS-GPS] Introduction - Tony Brookes

Hi All

 

I'm just about to have a go at building an Arduino data logger & GPS unit,
the one from Adafruit.
http://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-ultimate-gps-logger-shield/overview with
an external aerial.

 

The post processing software will be RTKLIB, and living in Europe I assume
I'll be using EGNOS. 

 

The intended use is to help with the surveying at archaeological sites our
society works at. 

 

I know there are plenty of commercial units but not at the process us
hobbyists can afford. We're quite comfortable that the accuracy will be not
as good as a commercial unit, but as long as it is good enough, and no worse
than our manual surveys, that's fine.

 

We will also be carrying out a back to back evaluation with a commercial
unit at some point to confirm our findings. [The "we" is the Derbyshire
Archaeological Society, who have been kind enough to support this project
with a grant].

 

There is a blog, www.vilis.org.uk, but that is brand new as well and I need
to write a lot more content to fit in with the open source ethos.

 

If there are any comments/advice/hints or experience you'd like to pass on,
please feel free.
