Alex,

While I think it important to publicly thank people for the conference,
I think it worth asking why we are thanking, and how can our thanking be
helpful.

I notice we are thanking Uni of Melbourne, and SSSI, who have both been
great enablers for us and deserve our thanks. But can we be more
impactful for them? How has their involvement involved their
organisational goals? Is the Uni wanting to promote education? Attract
Students? Something else? How can we demonstrate that we are achieving
that? Is SSSI wanting to promote the GIS industry? Are they wanting to
demonstrate their position as a facilitator and enabler of GIS
conversations? Discussing how successful the event is can demonstrate that.

For both these uses, I'd expect that a thank you, just before or during
the event would be best for that. Also we should be sending to the
widest audience, which we will have just before the event.

I also question why we are not listing all our sponsors. Sponsors are
typically wanting to demonstrate their relevance within the OSGeo
community, and hopefully attracting customers. Timing for a thanks to
them should be about the same time.

Cheers, Cameron
