In 2013 I sent out separate (but similar) regular update mails to registered delegates and to the sponsors and sponsor targets. in the early stage it was a monthly mail, then the frequency increased as we got close to the event. We also put copies of the delegate mails on the web site (see http://2013.foss4g.org/about-foss4g/delegate-info/index.html)

I got a lot of feedback from people saying how much they liked receiving these mails
