[Gdal-dev] GTOPO30 data read errors

I have downloaded the GTOPO30 data from edcftp cr usgs gov and find that
GDAL can not read most of it.  Many of the files appear to be mostly a
repeating sequence of D8 F1 D8 F1...

Question 1. Is the expected data sequence?

Question 2. Is there something I need to do with GDAL to get it to read
these files?

I have traced into the GDAL code into usgsdebdataset.cpp and it is
rejecting the files because it dose not find the character sequence it
is expecting.
