Right.

That's why we need a release :-) Then we could point people to an official
package... Later we'll have to modify v.[in|out].ogr (mhh, so we should
make a GRASS 5.7 release as well ...).

Yes, I think so, it works fine on Redhat 7/9, Mandrake 9.1, Debian 
(for me/our group).
