please, the version number really needs to be (at least) 1.2.0, since linking 
with gdal is _not_ backward compatible and you can't just bump the patch 
level.

as a regular user i'd be really p*ssed off if a library update from version 
x.y.z to x.y.z+1 would break all related apps, and some will not even build 
from source any more!

does the grass build system cope with the -lgdal.1.1 -> -lgdal stuff? i guess 
so, it is not hard, but we already had people reporting failed builds of 
third party applications :(.
