this looks harmless

weird! somehow libtool does not find the ar program or it doesn't like what it 
finds. is it possible that you don't have the 'ar' directory in your PATH? 
(unlikely)

can you see if something like:
$ AR=/path/to/ar ./configure [etc]
solves the problem?
