Thanks for your insight Martin, it helps. :)

Are ESRI's pyramid files (.rrd) compatible with gdal's (.ovr)?
It'd be cool if I could generate pyramids from the command line for all 
our images at once rather than at first load time by ArcMap/Catalog.
