Henning,

GDAL requires use of GNUmake, not just regular make.  The makefile is called
GNUmakefile.  Many suns seem to have GNUmake under the name "gmake" or
"gnumake". If not, you will need to install it from source.

PS. there is a gdal-1.2.0 final release available that is newer and better
than gdal-1.2.0b (which was a 1.2.0 beta).
