[Gdal-dev] Problem with Building Overviews

I'm experiencing odd behavior when having overviews built for a geoTiff.

When the dataset has been opened read-only I get the warning that the
overviews will be built externally which is expected.

But when the process is completed my whole app dies.  The overview file
appears to be completely built...

I realize that this isn't much to go on but, has anyone else experienced
this behavior?
