thanks a lot for your answer.
If it is not too hard for you, it will be good if I can get access to the
metadata setting quite quickly (today or tomorrow seems very good).
If you don't have time, I can try to dig into the code to make it, but I
never touched or used the metadata mecanism.

Stephane,
Currently the layerType is set to athematic by default, and only reset to
thematic if you write a pseudocolor table to the band. It wouldn't be
hard to add access to the layerType for getting and setting via metadata
if you need to be able to set it.
I should be able to implement it today or tomorrow if you decide you
need the ability.
