have a look at gdalautotest. There are plenty of examples under ogr dir
http://www.gdal.org/dl/gdalautotest-1.3.2.tar.gz

also there's some stuff here http://gdal.maptools.org/ogr/
generally speaking you can all the c++ api applies to python as well.
The convention in Python is that function names start with uppercase.
