Hi Neil.
I've been struggling with getting gdal compiled from source in Ubuntu for
weeks now to no avail (see
http://lists.maptools.org/pipermail/gdal-dev/2006-May/008865.html).
I'm using Ubuntu Dapper, have applied all available updates through Synaptic
to date.
Just for fun, here's the output from my latest unsuccessful make run:
creating libgdal.la
/bin/sed: can't read /usr/lib/libstdc++.la: No such file or directory
libtool: link: `/usr/lib/libstdc++.la' is not a valid libtool archive
make[1]: *** [libgdal.la] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/opt/gdal-1.3.2'
make: *** [check-lib] Error 2
This output is the same as in my original post. Glynn Clements had suggested
on the Grass GIS list to make a symbolic link between libstdc++.so.6 and
libstdc++.so, and hopefully that will cause it to pick up the shared C++
library rather than the static version. I tried this idea this morning with
no success. So I'm quite at a loss as to what to do next.
~ Eric.

Subject: [Gdal-dev] gdal for ubuntu
Hello, everybody. I have been trying to build gdal from source for my
ubuntu breezy box and have had some problems building .debs for both
1.3.1 and 1.3.2. How can I learn more about the status of the debian/
sub-directory and the possibility of getting upgraded packages into the
ubuntu repositories? I am not even sure up which tree to bark, so any
guidance is appreciated.
I saw some old notes about the gdal packages being stuck at 1.2.6, but
no explanation why. What are the roadblocks?
Anyone here involved with UbuntuGIS?

Neil
